Many people get confused between Liners and Boosters and therefore I will try to explain - I apologise in advance for this page - its where I get a bit graphic about the ahem "by-products".

A liner is an extra single layer that you add to the nappy either to protect your baby's bottom from dampness, or to make it easier to dispose of the poo.

You may with to use either fleece or paper, or both together.  Part of your decision will depend on whether your baby is breast-fed, bottle-fed or weaned.

A fleece liner will keep baby's bottom as dry as a disposable.  I don't understand the technology - but experience has shown that any urine goes through the fleece into the absorbant part of the nappy and stays there - the fleece remains dry.

Fleece liners are excellent for breast-fed poo - the loops in it 'catch' the poo before it runs all over the place - my experience is that a fleece liner is far better than using a paper liner or disposable nappy because BF poo runs straight off those before it gets a chance to soak through!

While I was breast feeding  I would 'stretch' my fleece liners under a hard-running tap - the 'poo' if you can call it that floated off down the sink - and into the sewage system - much better than struggling to rinse it down the loo!

Solid Poo generally shakes off fleece relatively easily as well, but if you want real ease of disposal then placing a bio-degragable liner over the top of the nappy or fleece liner means that you can simply lift the liner and the poo and flush them both down the loo.

PS - Beware of non-flushable liners - such as those sold by Mothercare and Boots - I think they make your life more difficult - you need a bin nearby to dispose of the liner or you end up putting it in a nappy sack - and you need to attempt to shake the poo off it and throw it down the loo - been there, done it - learn by my mistakes ;-)

A booster on the other hand is an additional amount of 'absorbancy' which you can add to any washable nappy to increase the amount of time before it is 'soaked' - these are very useful for night-time nappies and for long car journeys.

Because boosters are seperate from the nappy they can be placed exactly where your baby needs the extra absorbancy.  For example, most boys need it at the front - most girls need it in the middle or at the back - of course my girl had to be different - she needed it at the front!
